Kalongo and Koleilat: Forge FC’s Ultimate Goalkeeping Tandem

In soccer, much of the excitement revolves around the strikers’ goals, the fluid ball movement orchestrated by the midfield, and the dazzling skills of flashy wingers. Often, the focus is on a team’s ability to score and create chances. However, the difference between winning and losing can frequently come down to the player at the back — the goalkeeper. A key figure in any team, the goalkeeper directs play from the rear, while making dynamic and agile saves that few others are capable of.

For Forge FC in the 2024 season, two goalkeepers have made a significant impact. The first is Christopher Kalongo. After joining Forge FC in September 2021, with Triston Henry as the starting keeper at the time, Kalongo made just 4 saves in 3 appearances during his early days at the club. However, the 2024 season has been a completely different story. Across all competitions, Kalongo has made 65 saves — 35 in the CPL, 19 in the Canadian Championship, and 11 in the CONCACAF competitions — in just 19 games, averaging 3.42 saves per game. In addition, Kalongo has proven to be a reliable presence for Forge FC, with 10 wins and 4 clean sheets to his name this season.

Equally impressive is the impact of Forge FC’s newest goalkeeper, Jassem Koleilat, who signed with the club in March 2024. Though Koleilat has made only 10 appearances so far, each has been crucial to the team’s success. He has recorded 29 saves across all competitions, averaging 2.90 saves per game. In his debut season, Koleilat has helped secure 5 wins and 5 clean sheets, quickly proving himself as an excellent option between the posts.

Having two goalkeepers of such high calibre is a rare luxury for any team. While clubs can rotate multiple defenders, midfielders, or attackers, only one goalkeeper can play at a time. This presents a unique challenge for the coach, who must decide which talented player to rely on.

So, who will Forge FC turn to as their main goalkeeper? Find out at their next home match on Saturday, September 28, when Forge FC faces York United FC at Tim Hortons Field.
